Sheboygan County Shooting Update

The Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department is continuing to investigate a fatal shooting which occurred Tuesday night at Racer's Hall Tavern near Plymouth.  During a press conference yesterday Sheriff's Captain Dave Adams said deputies were dispatched after receiving a 911 call that multiple shots had been fired. Thirty-one-year-old Jason TenPas of Cascade was lying on the deck adjacent to the bar dead. A 63-year-old Glenbeulah man was being held by another man on the deck.  Adams says a handgun was used in the shooting.  At the time of the press conference he had no information on what may have prompted the shooting, although everyone at the scene was interviewed. The suspect is being held on a charge of first degree murder.  The Glenbeulah man has a past history of some police contacts, but none were believed to be of a violent nature.

Man Dead Following Shooting Incident In Berlin

A man is dead following a stand off with authorities in the city of Berlin last night. Berlin Police responded to the area of Oak Street and East Liberty Street just before 6 p.m. and found a woman who had been shot. She was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. The Green Lake County Combined Tactical Unit was called and set a perimeter up around a home the shooter was in. About 9:15 last night they entered the home and found the man dead. Sheriff's officials say all those involved in the shooting incident have been accounted for.

West Bend Man Hurt In Washington County Accident

A West Bend man was seriously injured when he lost control of his motorcycle in the town of Farmington Tuesday night. Washington County Sheriff's officials say received a call shortly before 9:30 p.m. about a man lying unconscious in the middle of State Highway 144 near the intersection with County Highway HH. Henry Krier Jr. was flown by a Flight for Life helicopter from the scene to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. Investigators believe Krier was on County Highway HH when he lost control and went through a stop sign at the intersection. The motorcycle ended up on its side and skidded into the intersection. Alcohol was a factor in the accident Krier wasn't wearing a helmet.

Charges Sought In Drunk Driving Injury Accident

Ripon police are seeking charges against a 45-year-old Marshfield man who hit two men in a motel parking lot with his pickup truck late last Saturday night. The man is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail pending charges of injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle. A 34-year-old Elkhorn man hit by the truck is recovering at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center. The other victim, a 36-year-old Princeton man, was treated at Ripon Medical Center and released. The incident happened in the Ridgewood Motel parking lot.

Craigslist Conspirator Sentenced

The 19-year-old former Fond du Lac man involved in a craigslist prostitution scheme is going to prison for seven years. Bret Carter was sentenced in Fond du Lac County Court Monday. Judge Peter Grimm also ordered Carter to be on extended supervision for four years after he completes his prison term. Last November Carter, two teenage women and Dustin Van Kooy were involved in a scheme which lured a man to a Fond du Lac motel for sex. When the man arrived he was robbed; Carter punched him in the face and Van Kooy hit him in the back with a baseball bat.  Van Kooy has been sentenced to eight years in prison for his role in the robbery

Gaming Machines At FDL Taverns Targeted By Thieves

Three black men have developed a routine to rob tavern and restaurant owners of money in their gaming machines. According to police reports five gaming machines were broken into at the Coliseum Bar & Grill early the morning of Monday, August 23rd. One of the men sat apparently playing the machines while the two others stood on either side. It's estimated that about $1,800 in cash was taken from the five machine and several hundred dollars in damage was done to them in effort to get to the cash boxes inside. A similar theft was reported at Slim & Chubby's the previous night and in that robbery as well three black men were the last observed at two machines that were broken into. That theft netted about $200 and again the machines were damaged.

Missing Snake Found

That missing six-foot long Water Boa snake in Fond du Lac has been found. The snake had escaped its enclosure at a Walnut Street home last weekend. Police say the owner found the snake in a garage at the home Tuesday afternoon and believes that it probably never left the property.  That type of snake is non-poisonous and isn't considered a threat to people.

Wisconsin PSC Approves Wind Siting Rules

(Wisconsin Radio Network)-The state's new rules on siting wind turbines take away from local control, but give certainty to the industry. The state Public Service Commission finalized wind siting rules this week. Not everyone is pleased. Calumet County Administrator Jay Shambeau says they are less restrictive than what Calumet County currently has. But Michael Vickerman, executive director of Renew Wisconsin, which advocated for the statewide standards, says the new rules will give the wind industry something the local rules don't; uniformity.  Lawmakers in 2009 passed an act directing the PSC to formulate the statewide rules, which the legislature must now approve. A copy of the rules and a press release summarizing them are available at the PSC website.

New Device Helps Track Firefighters In Danger

A new piece of equipment will help Fond du Lac firefighters track coworkers lost in fire or smoke filled buildings. Fire Lieutenant Todd Shippee  says firefighters' air packs come equipped with alarms that sound when they become trapped or quit moving during firefighting efforts. However they aren't always easy to find. Now a pack tracker, similar to a thermal imaging camera, allows them to tell where a firefighter is in a building. He says it's able to track multiple firefighters at the same time. The tracker tells you how close you are to that person. He notes they even work through walls. Shippee says while the alarms equipped on air packs are loud, as the Country found out with 9-11 they alone aren't enough to find trapped firefighters.

Feingold Bill Would Expand On Hire Act

Senator Russ Feingold says the federal stimulus bill and Hire Act were good starts. He wants to give a 15 percent tax credit to those companies who hire new employees or gives higher wages or more hours to current employees. Feingold says his bill would expand on the current Hire Act and together they would pump billions of dollars in payroll into the economy over the next two years.

Second Annual Captain Derek Dobogai Memorial Run/Walk

Organizers of run/walk event that remembers a former Winnebago Lutheran Academy graduate who lost his life in Iraq are hoping for a good turnout this Labor Day weekend. The 2nd Annual Captain Derek Dobogai Memorial Run/Walk will be held at the WLA track this Saturday. Derek and 14 other American soldiers were killed when their Blackhawk helicopter crashed in northern Iraq in August of 2007. His mother Lisa says seeing Derek's army buddies during the event brings back good memories. This year a Blackhawk helicopter will be landing on the football field and they will also be collecting packages and donations of items for packages for deployed soldiers.  Proceeds will be split between the WLA Track fund and the Wounded Warrior Project. Registration begins at 7 a.m. There will be 10K and 5K runs, a 5K walk and runs for children. There's also a raffle with a week's stay at the Grand View Las Vegas Hotel the top prize. Honest Kid Golfer

(Associated Press)-Zach Nash was shocked when he discovered he had one too many golf clubs in his bag 2 hours after winning a junior Wisconsin PGA tournament. But rules are rules and the 14-year-old from the southern Wisconsin community of Waterford made the decision that some adults wouldn't make: He disqualified himself and surrendered his medal. The Wisconsin PGA plans to present it to runner-up Dane Reinhardt.  Nash says he wouldn't have been able to live with himself if he had kept the medal. Golf prides itself on honesty and players calling penalties on themselves. One of Nash's golf mentors, Chris Wood, says many adults would have justified keeping the medal by saying they didn't use the extra club. He's proud of Nash for being honest.  The boy's actions were first reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in a column by Gary D'Amato.
