Wild Rose Man Dies When Truck Goes Through Ice

A 45-year-old Wild Rose man died after his truck went through the ice of the Fox River in Berlin this weekend. Green Lake County Sheriff's officials say they received a call early Saturday morning. Officers found Kenneth Nigbor in the passenger compartment of the truck, which was about 10 to 15 feet from shore. Nigbor was unresponsive and he was taken to Berlin Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

 Pedestrian Safety

The pedestrians involved in a tragic accident involving a car that hit a 2-year-old girl in a Fond du Lac crosswalk didn't do anything wrong. Police Officer Steve Olson says they were within their rights and got the traffic signal they should of to cross the road. Olson says children have a different perception about cars and their abilities to stop. He says parents should take time to teach their kids about how dangerous a car can be to them. Olson gave more tips about pedestrian safety during the Behind the Badge program Friday. You can hear more of them under the Breakfast Club tab of the podcasts section on KFIZ.com.

FDL Smoking Ban Puts It Ahead Of The Curve

The Fond du Lac County Tobacco Control program coordinator says Fond du Lac should be well prepared when the statewide smoking ban goes into effect in July. Sandy Bernier  says she has received comments from people saying how much they enjoy going out to bars and restaurant and not having to put up with the second hand smoke. She's even gotten some nice comments from some of the bartenders. She says the ordinance the City of Fond du Lac put into effect a year ago this past week put the city ahead of most of the rest of the state. She says currently smoking is allowed in some motel and hotel rooms in the city, but that will change when the state law goes into effect on July 5th. The Fond du Lac City Council actually passed the workplace smoking ban in the fall of 2008, but it didn't go into effect until February 2nd of 2009.

Eden Man Charged For Allegedly Making Threat With Gun

An Eden man is suspected of trying to warn another man away from sister by using a gun to make the point. Fond du Lac County Sheriff's deputies were called to an Eden residence last Wednesday evening. A man told them that 50-year-old Steven Smith had entered the home and threatened him with a gun. Smith denied having the gun, but was intoxicated when investigators spoke to him. He was charged in Fond du Lac County Court last Friday for that incident and allegedly driving drunk the same day. He was released on a signature bond.

Waupun Man Facing Gun Charge

A 24-year-old Waupun man is facing a weapons charge for an incident early last Thursday morning. According to the criminal complaint Ryan Dykstra was drunk when he was handling a 9 millimeter handgun in a parking lot in Ripon. Dykstra was in a crowd and a Ripon police officer had to draw his weapon and order him to the ground. The gun was loaded, but no one was hurt in the incident. Dykstra has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a firearm while intoxicated. Both charges are misdemeanors. He's free on a signature bond.

Sheboygan Man Tries To Blackmail Women

(WHBL-Sheboygan)-An 18-year-old Sheboygan man is in custody after police say he used the website MySpace to blackmail young women into sending him revealing pictures of themselves. Dalton Lee Vandeloo is charged with two counts of threatening to communicate derogatory information after authorities allege he used the social networking site to secure the provocative pictures of his victims. According to the criminal complaint, filed Friday in Sheboygan County Court, two women, one 20 and the other 22, had been contacted by Vandeloo on MySpace about incriminating photos he had of the 22-year-old. Vandeloo, using an online pseudonym, asked the 20-year-old for a topless photo of herself and had told the 22-year-old that if she did not send him more pictures, he would upload the ones he already possessed to an online pornography website. Police executed a search warrant at Vandeloo's home this past Wednesday where they located a computer with a folder entitled "blackmail" that had numerous photos of multiple women. Vandeloo could face additional charges, possibly on the federal level, as he had contacted women in other states, threatening to extort them as well.

FDL Park Avenue Project The Big Street Project For City This Year

The big street project for the City of Fond du Lac this summer will be on South Park Avenue. During the estimated $2.1 million project a section from Johnson to 5th Street and 6th to 7th Street will be improved. Public Works Director Mark Lentz says it will be similar to the work that was done on 6th Street in terms of project duration. He says it will likely begin in April and wrap up in late September or early October. Lentz sys they will try and maintain access to people who live along that stretch of street or have businesses there, but there will be some inconveniences for motorists. The project was originally slated for last year, but it was put off so some underground utility work could be completed first.

FDL School Board Preview

The Fond du Lac School Board this afternoon will hear about a proposal to refinance $7.1 million in debt that comes due next year. Also at today's meeting the Board will be asked to approve the performing music curriculum for grades 5 through 12 and Superintendent Jim Sebert will highlight the district's open enrollment efforts. The meeting is at 4:30 p.m. at the District Administration Center Board Room on West 9th Street. Sebert will be a guest on The Morning Show with Bob Hoffmaster at 11 a.m. this morning.

Townsend Bill Signed Into Law

Among a batch of bills Governor Doyle signed into law this week was one that State Assemblyman John Townsend had a hand in. Assembly Bill 83 allows unemployed veterans with disabilities that don't allow them to work to get fishing licenses for a reduced fee. Townsend says it's something Fond du Lac County Veterans Service Officer John Wertschnig suggested to him while he was at the County Fair a couple of years ago. Townsend says it's another small way for residents to thank veterans for their service and sacrifice. The state lawmaker from Fond du Lac notes it took almost a year from the time the bill was introduced until it became law.

More Than 3,900 Deer Donated Through Venison Program

(Wisconsin Radio Network)-The DNR has compiled final figures on donations to food pantries from last year's deer hunt, and the numbers are down from the year before. Laurie Fike says that's because hunters shot fewer whitetails. She says 3,921 deer were donated which resulted in 176,000 pounds of ground venison, which she says was really appreciated by the food pantries that meat was donated to and those who go through the pantries. Nearly half of the state's licensed meat processors participate in the food pantry program for venison donations. Dane County had the most deer donated with 483, followed by Buffalo County with 258 and Columbia County with 200.

Grandparents Scam

Wisconsin's Better Business Bureau is warning seniors after an elderly couple in St. Croix County lost more than $19,000 to scammers. It was a scam in which someone claiming to be their grandson's lawyer called to say their grandson had been in a traffic accident in Canada and needed money. The scammer went on to say the money was needed for bail, to pay for damages, and that a pregnant woman involved in the accident was now in a coma. Another caller posing as their grandson said not to tell his parents. The couple lost more than $19,000 in the scam. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Center, there were 278 reports of failed and 88 reports of successful Grandparent scams during the first 10 months of last year. Those scams netted con artists nearly $318,000. It's estimated that only reflects about 5 percent of the actual number of cases. To reports cases to the Better Business Burea call 1-800-273-1002.
