A Packer Draws A Crowd In FDL In The Name Of Child Safety
Several hundred people turned out at
the Fond du Lac Fire Station on South Main Street this afternoon to catch a
glimpse of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson who is participating in
an effort to provide child ID kits for every child in Wisconsin. The Packers are
the first team in the NFL and Fond du Lac is the first City in the country
involved in the effort to increase child safety, awareness and raise funds to
provide kits for about 1 million children in the state. The local firefighters
union and Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin are involved. American
Football Coaches Association Executive Director Kenny Hansmire gave the
gathering background information on the program and said there’s is no better
organization than the Green Bay Packers. He also introduced Jordy Nelson who he
said will be nominated for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his
efforts. Nelson said being part of the the Packers, the first team to be a part
of this, is an honor. He also talked about the importance of being a role model
and giving back to the community. The Child ID Kit includes an inkless
fingerprint card, a DNA collection swab, and a cut-out wallet card. The kit can
be used in the event that the child ever goes missing. More than 800,000
children go missing in America every year. About one child every 40
seconds.
