August ’18 Tornado Outbreak One of the “Top Weather Events” of the Last Decade
A 2018 tornado outbreak in east-central Wisconsin is one of
the National Weather Service’s “Top 10” weather events of the last decade. The
NWS ranked the numerous severe weather events that hit Wisconsin between August
17th and September 5th of that year as the #8 biggest
weather event of the 2010s.
The tornado outbreak on August 28 of that year saw 19
tornadoes hit the region – with touchdowns and damage reported in Marquette,
Green Lake, Fond du Lac, Dodge, Sheboygan and Calumet counties. 13 EF-1 tornadoes
and five EF-0 tornadoes touched down in the area, with an EF-2 rated storm
reported near Brownsville. That storm carried maximum wind speeds of 125 miles-per-hour
and was on the ground for just under four miles. Thankfully, no injuries or
deaths were reported as a result of the storms.
The NWS says the #1 weather event of the decade was the Groundhog’s
Day Blizzard of 2011, which saw over a foot of snow and over 60 mile-per-hour
winds to southern and southeast Wisconsin. #2 was an April 2011 tornado
outbreak that saw 15 tornadoes hit central and northeast Wisconsin, including one
each in Green Lake and Calumet counties.
