Baldwin Joins 18 Other Senators Asking DOJ For Investigation

Following the heels of the beef packing plant outbreaks associated with COVID-19, comes
a bipartisan push for a Department of Justice investigation. A letter was sent
to U.S. Attorney General William Barr, and signed by Wisconsin Senator Tammy
Baldwin and 18 other Senators, asking the DOJ look into suspected price
manipulation and anti-competitive behavior in the highly concentrated cattle
industry. The letter says the lack of competition in the meatpacking industry
has resulted in a vulnerable beef supply chain. The letter also states the four
major beef packing companies control over 80 percent of the cattle industry. The
Senators are asking that the DOJ look into collusion or other unfair and
deceptive practices they say exist in the packing industry.
