Ballweg Leadership Scholarships Presented

State Representative Joan Ballweg (R-Markesan) presented her 2017 Joan Ballweg Leadership Scholarships last month to outstanding students across the 41st Assembly District. Each scholarship winner received their award from Rep. Ballweg during their schools’ awards night.

“These scholarships are awarded to hard working students who demonstrate a balance in their activities, achieve good grades, and are outstanding role models and leaders among their peers,” said Ballweg. “Each spring, I look forward to learning about the student leaders we have in the 41st Assembly District. This year’s group of leaders are driven and inspiring, and I know they will continue to do great things as they go on to pursue their degrees.”

The recipients of the 2017 Joan Ballweg Leadership Scholarship each receive a $500 scholarship. This year’s winners are:

Rebecca Jacobson, Princeton High School, is a well-rounded student leader. Her strong work ethic has led to success in both academics and athletics. She is active inside and outside of the classroom in activities such as football and engineering class. Rebecca has been very involved throughout her high school career in activities such as band, National Honor Society, and volunteering for the American Legion. Rebecca will study Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota in the fall.

Cailey Norgard, Wisconsin Dells High School, has seen success in established sports and organizations, but also saw the need to start and founded the Anne Herbert Society, also known as the Kindness Club. Cailey will continue her education at the University of Minnesota this fall to study architecture. She was inspired to study architecture by her service trip to Costa Rica last summer.

Alexis Riggs, Green Lake High School, is truly a self-starter and has an entrepreneurial spirit. She was voted class president all four years of her high school experience and is recognized by her peers as a natural leader. She has been very involved in and out of the classroom, and hopes to open her own business someday. Alexis will attend Ripon College this fall.

Julie Fleegal, Berlin High School, is an outstanding student and was involved in sports and clubs throughout school, while also finding time to be involved in the family business of agriculture. Julie had the opportunity to lead and mentor students of all ages as part of both FFA and 4H. This fall, she will attend the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to major in Biology in hopes of going to medical school.

Amanda Gimenez, Berlin High School, is a very talented in artist, athlete, and student. I have enjoyed seeing her artwork displayed in the Capitol rotunda each year as part of youth art month. She also participated in clubs, such as National Honor Society, Band, and Mock Trial. In the fall, Amanda will pursue a degree in Animal Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
