Beaver Dam Man Faces Felony Charge After Crash into School

A 22-year-old Beaver Dam man faces a felony charge after
crashing into a school in the city late Wednesday night. Roy Cortez faces one
count of Fleeing and Eluding an Officer Causing Bodily Harm or Property Damage
after crashing into the Beaver Dam Middle School following what police say was
a domestic disturbance. Officers were called to the 800 block of Center Street
around 11:15 pm for the domestic call. The woman on scene said Cortez had been
drinking and broke a window after she locked them out of their home. Cortez
left the home in his car, then drove past the house while police were still on
scene. An officer tried to stop Cortez, but he drove away, reaching speeds between
80 and 90 miles per hour. Cortez then crashed his car into an electrical
transformer that supplied power to a large portion of the building and hit the
exterior wall. The Beaver Dam Fire Department responded to the scene to put out
a fire caused by the crash. Cortez is being held on a $10,000 cash bond, he’s
due back in court next Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
