BMX Skate Park Praise

Fond du Lac City Council members recently got some praise on their recent action to open up the skateboard park at Adelaide Park to BMX bike enthusiasts. Christina Umbreit went before the Council last week and said it has been a very positive experience for her family. She says her son had been using Midwest Skate Park in Waucousta, which is closed for the summer at the very least. She says that’s a 25 to 30 mile ride when Adelaide Park is something BMX bikers in the City can ride to on their bikes.  Her 12-year-old son Logan also thanked the Council. She says the different user groups at the park seem to be getting along. The Council agreed to allow a trial period at the park this summer to see if skateboarders and BMX bikers could co-exist at the park. There had been some conflicts in the past.

I have to admit, I would take my son (7 yr old) to the park early on Sat or Sun mornings to avoid the bigger kids that seemed to not care about their actions or language.
One morning there were some kids on bikes there, there was one kid maybe 16 yrs old who upon seeing my son riding his skateboard, he announced to the other bike kids that they need to pay attention to the little kid, and if anybody gets too close to him, would get pounded by him.
While this was a little rough, I told him I appreciated that he would step up and try to protect the little kids who use that park.
Totally blew the image I had of kids using bikes in the the park (at this point in time, it wasn't allowed at all)
When I heard about the city trying to allow bikes in the park, my first reaction was the kids on bikes seemed to behave better than most of the kids on boards that were there. So far I haven't seen any issues other than it getting a little crowded at times.

Thanks for this feedback especially about older kids protecting younger. That is my experience also. If you would like to hear about more experiences and events that will be upcoming at the skate park please consider "liking" the Facebook page "Expand Adelaide Skatepark". Lets keep the positive spirit going and create a legacy for our youth!!!
