Board Recommends Denial Of Street Name Change Request

The Fond du Lac Advisory Parking and Traffic Board voted unanimously Thursday afternoon to recommend to the City Council to deny a request to change the name of a two block section of Sheboygan Street to Avenue of the Arts. Windhover Center for the Arts Executive Director Kevin Miller had made the request for the section of Sheboygan Street from Marr to Main Streets. He was there to address the Board as was Fond du Lac Visitors Bureau President Craig Molitor who said there's some incredible momentum being built with the Windhover's expansion. Elks Club Exalted Ruler John Emery said he was a big supporter of what the Windhover is doing, but there was no upside for the 400 members of the local lodge to be included in the street name change. Board Chairman Gerry Bonlander suggested the museum ask for an honorary name change for the street that could be included under Sheboygan Street on the street signs. The matter will also go before the Plan Commission next month, before going to the City Council at the end of June, just after the Windhover's big reveal event. Windhover Center Facebook photo.

Any change, including adding honorary signs below the real street signs should be paid for by the Windhover....this would clearly be an inappropriate use of tax dollars. And saying people confuse Sheboygan Street with the City of Sheboygan??? I hope they dont go to Oshkosh (Fond du Lac Rd) or Milwaukee (Fond du Lac Ave)just to mention a few.

"inapproriate use of tax dollars"?!?! Funding of the arts and education is never a waste of tax dollars.

“The arts are the best insurance policy a city can take on itself.”

Let the Windover pay for the signs. I used to spend approximately $100/year on their annual auction, but after reading they are trying to waste tax dollars, I assure you I will NEVER spend one penny on anything Windover related.

The arts are important but changing the name of the street not necessary and will make it more confusing for local and from people from out of town. The idea of changing the name of the street on a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being good) gets a 2.

I'm not in favor of changing the street name, but giving the area an honorary name to be included sounds like a middle ground. Avenue of the Arts, sounds good.

Miller has a very poor excuse for changing the name. In short he's stating that people are stupid. Reality is he wants to change the name for his ego.

Didn't know someones ego could get any bigger. Maybe Kevin Miller should pay to have it changed to Miller Ave- sounds like that's more what he would want.

Couldnt be truer about ego. I was at a concert there one night and all i heard was some loud arrogant person talking about how stupid all these people were. This idea is stupid.

What a waste of tax dollars and time it would be to rename the street. This change would have more of a negative effect than good which would defeat the purpose of the art center. Windhover is a great concept and I am in favor of the gallery as part of celebrating the arts; however, perhaps Kevin Miller could consider renaming Windhover to reflect the street name rather than make suggestions that he's clearly out of touch with. The notion is selfish and pompous. I'm really surprised Kevin is still Executive Director...this is over the top.
