Brutal Temperatures Lead To FDL Womans Death

The 27-year-old Fond du Lac woman who died of exposure after walking away from an ice shanty on Lake Winnebago New Year’s morning wasn’t dressed appropriately for the bitterly cold weather. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says Lindsey Klima had been celebrating with others in the shanty when she left to have a cigarette. She ended up on shore. She left the shanty about 1:30 a.m. and her body was found 6:30 Monday evening on shore near Garden Drive, a couple hours after she was reported missing. Waldschmidt says she may have been dressed to be inside a shelter with others, but even though investigators working the scene were dressed appropriately for outdoors it was cold for them Monday. He points out the conditions were brutal and they can turn deadly real quick. The shanty was only about 100 to 150 yards off the shoreline. Waldschmidt says they do not know where Klima was intending to go when she left the shanty. Foul play is not suspected.
