Childrens Museum Of FDL Hosts 90th Birthday Party

Marilyn Joy McCallum celebrated her 90th birthday with a party at the Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac.  More than 100 people attended the celebration with kids of all ages ranging from 1 to 95.  While drizzly outside, there was laughter and reminiscing inside the Museum’s Celebration Central party room.

Marilyn Libke was born in April 1926 in Two Rivers, WI.  She lived through the great depression, WWII, and into the age of technology.  Raised in New Holstein and Fond du Lac, she graduated from LP Goodrich high school in Fond du Lac.  After graduation she took the train to Washington D.C. where she helped the war effort by working for the F.B.I. and the War Department.  She was chosen to greet Eleanor Roosevelt when the First Lady visited the government workers’ dormitories.

In 1948, after a year at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Marilyn eloped with George D. McCallum.  They settled in Fond du Lac and raised four children: Scott, Ann, John and Charles.  Their son Scott went on to become Governor of Wisconsin.

An accomplished musician, Marilyn was known for her violin playing.  She has been a member of the Fond du Lac Public Library for 85 years. She was a Scouts den leader, PTO president, church member, and worked for Sears and First Wisconsin Bank (US Bank).  In addition to her four children, she has eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  Marilyn – or Nana – has supported her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their school and sports activities.

Marilyn’s choice to have her party at the Children’s Museum was an easy one.  The space provided all the amenities to ensure a successful event for such a large and age-diverse attendance and a helpful staff to keep the party fun and effortless.   Guests could explore and interact with the Museum’s many hands-on exhibits and the children had the freedom to play in a safe learning environment.

“It was an honor to host Marilyn’s party.  The grown-ups entering the facility were as excited as the children.  This is a great example of the many ways that the Museum has grown in the past few years in our new location and we look forward to many more programs and events,” commented Andrea Welsch, Children’s Museum Executive Director.

Marilyn looks forward to returning to the Children’s Museum in 2021 to celebrate her 95th birthday proving we are all young at heart!
