Circumstances Of Recent FDL Fires Could Have Been Worse

Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue responded to two recent fires that one official says could have been worse. Division Chief of Fire Prevention Troy Haase says an explosion and fire on Breister Avenue Saturday was caused by a gas can that got tipped over. He says the gas leaked into the basement level and fumes were ignited by a sump pump that kicked on. He says it is fortunate no one was at home when the explosion occurred. He says basement fires can also be difficult to put out because of lack of access. Haase says in this case Fire Station #2 wasn’t too far away. He says during another fire involving a two-story wood frame garage and van on West Division Street the garage was next to a power pole. Alliant Energy had to turn off power to several homes to make it safe for firefighters to put out the blaze. Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue photo.
