Cold Weather Safety Tips

Fond du Lac County’s director of communications and emergency management says residents are acquainted with most cold-weather safety tips, but there are a few others they should keep in mind. Jim McNabb says for instance making sure space heaters are off when you go to bed or leave a room makes sense, but do the same for fireplaces. He says make sure the embers are out and the fireplace screens are in place. He says when temperatures and wind chills get down to zero or below, it’s a good idea to keep a tap open and water running at least a little. He says that could prevent a big repair bill if you pipes freeze. McNabb also says ovens and stoves weren’t meant to heat a room and it’s unsafe to do so.
