Cost Of Body Cameras Not The Only Consideration For Law Enforcement

There’s more to consider than the cost of a body camera when law enforcement agencies talk about getting them for their officers. Fond du Lac Assistant Police Chief Steve Klein says they’ve started looking into them. He says the cameras aren’t the only cost to consider. He says you have to think about costs for storing the video footage and there are also privacy rights to consider. Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Captain Rick Olig says they looked into a federal grant for purchasing body cams, but the department wasn’t eligible. He says they aren’t against getting them, but you do need a plan on when they should be on, how you download them and where do you put all the data. Olig says some of the video has to be stored for seven years or more and everything on them has to be stored for a minimum of 125 days.
