Destination Lake Winnebago Region Prepares for Big Winter Events

Destination Lake Winnebago Region is continuing to work to draw people to interesting events around Fond du Lac and the surrounding area. While summertime around the lake is usually an easy sell, the frigid winter can make things a bit more difficult. But President Craig Molitor tells us they took a look at sturgeon spearing – and found it to be an interesting and sustainable activity.

Molitor says “we also saw a void of activity in the winter time and a need for more business so we just took those two thoughts, put them together, and created Sturgeon Spectacular. And this will be our fourth annual Sturgeon Spectacular. It always coincides with the opening of sturgeon spearing season, so it’s always the second weekend of February.”

And as they continue to grow the Sturgeon Spectacular, heading into its fourth year, Molitor says another event will be held that same weekend.

Molitor tells us he’s “super excited to, this year, announce the return of the World Ice and Snow Sailing Championships, which are going to coincide with Sturgeon Spectacular.”

But Molitor says putting on either of these events is not an easy task. He admits that Destination Lake Winnebago Region is going to need some assistance from the community.

He points out that “we do need help from the locals. The folks with Walleye Weekend and Fondue Fest will tell you that so much of what is done in these events is done by volunteers. And so we need – I’ll just put it plainly – we need help. We need help pulling all of these pieces together.”
