Dog Attack Strengthens Character Of Free SPIRIT Rider Horses

The Executive Director of Free SPIRIT Riders in Fond du Lac says their horses are still adjusting after a dog attack on them this past June. Mary Narges says they still aren’t able to offer a full class schedule because the horses are still recovering, though most no longer have physical wounds. Free SPIRIT Riders is a therapeutic horse riding program for people with cognitive and physical disabilities. Narges says the only horse still recovering from a wound is Molly, a Shetland pony, who although the smallest of the bunch many be the strongest in spirit. She says the horses have adopted a herd-like mentality and the attack has actually left them stronger. Also this week the Fond du Lac County Board approved a $4,500 claim from Free SPIRIT Riders for damage done by the dog. County Executive Al Buechel says the request went through the proper channels. The horses killed the dog that attacked them.
