Drivers Encouraged to Use Caution on Roads as Storm Winds Down

Drivers around the state are being urged to use
extra caution on roads the rest of today as the snow storm makes its way out of
the region. Snow totals were forecast to be within the 5 to 10 inch range for
much of the area, and early reports reflect that. The city of Fond du Lac had a
report of six inches of snow, Waupun reported five and a half inches, while
Ripon reported five inches. A snow report into the weather service from
Brownsville measured eight inches of new snow.

Road conditions around the area were still
listed as snow covered as of early this afternoon, and the Department of
Transportation says hazardous travel conditions will continue and impact the
evening commute. The DOT says to make sure you know the current road conditions
before you travel, clear snow and ice from your car and to make you have enough
gas and window washer fluid. While driving, the DOT says to slow down – and
drive for the road conditions, increase following distance to leave plenty of
room for stopping, and to give enough room for snowplows and to move over and
slow down for emergency vehicles.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Deputies responded
to 18 runoffs and four crashes on first shift today (Wednesday), while the
Wisconsin State Patrol responded to 50 vehicle runoffs statewide between 11 am
Tuesday and 7 am Wednesday. Troopers also responded to 35 crashes with property
damage, three personal injury crashes, 13 crashes with unknown injuries and
three hit and run crashes.
