Duplex Fire Displaces Several Residents; Dogs & Other Animals Rescued from the Home

22-Jan-2020

Around 12 people were displaced and several animals had to be rescued after a fire in a duplex in the City of Fond du Lac Wednesday morning.

Fond du Lac Firefighters were called to the home in the 100 block of 8th street just after 11:30 AM for the report of a fire. A news release says the upstairs tenant was the first to notice the fire, and called 9-1-1.

Fire crews responding to the scene found the fire in a first floor bedroom and were able to contain it there.

Firefighters were able to successfully rescue several adult dogs and several puppies. In addition, a hedgehog, a lizard and exotic birds all survived. Two exotic Sugar Gliders were killed in the fire.

The upstairs tenant and his daughter was able to evacuate the home safely – while the people who live on the first floor and basement were not at home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.

The release says there were no working smoke alarms on the first floor or basement of the home. The home was deemed uninhabitable – and the Red Cross was called in to assist the displaced residents.

Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue is still investigating the cause of the fire. Officials will be canvassing the neighborhood again tomorrow (Thursday) to remind people about fire safety and the importance of working smoke detectors.
