Extradition Next Step In Infant Death Case

Fond du Lac Police didn’t rest on their laurels after getting a nationwide warrant issued for an Illinois man wanted for the death of a 14-month-old boy and severe injuries to his twin brother. Daniel Antwon Griffin was arrested in Dallas, Texas Tuesday. Fond du Lac Assistant Police Chief Steve Thiry says Detectives Matt Bobo and Nick Hahn developed information that the 29-year-old Griffin was in Dallas and they worked with the U.S. Marshal’s Office on Griffin’s apprehension. He says their detectives never really gave up on finding Griffin after they developed enough information to back up charges. Griffin is facing 1st degree reckless homicide and 2 counts of child abuse causing great bodily harm when he’s extradited back to Wisconsin. His 24-year-old girlfriend, Airrealle Smart is also facing charges for the baby’s death and will be back in Fond du Lac County Court next month. The two were visiting a friend of Smart’s at the Maplewood Commons Apartments in Fond du Lac on July 7th when the infant’s death occurred. Griffin allegedly stood on the baby’s chest and caused other injuries to the infant’s twin brother.
