FDL Man May Have Been Asleep When He Hit Woman With Car

The 47-year-old Fond du Lac man who drove up on a grassy area off Winnebago Drive and struck a 46-year-old Fond du Lac woman may have been asleep at the wheel after smoking marijuana and drinking heavily the night before. Bond was set at $25,000 cash when Aarron Schmitz Sr. was charged in Fond du Lac County Court today. In reviewing the complaint to the judge, District Attorney Eric Toney said Schmitz had allegedly smoked three large marijuana cigarettes and drank a liter of Kessler’s whiskey the night before the accident and may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He hit Traci Luther Tuesday night. Luther is still in critical condition at the Theda Clark Regional Medical Center. She was out for a walk when she was struck. Schmitz is charged with 2nd degree reckless injury, injury by use of vehicle while under the influence a controlled substance and two counts of misdemeanor bail jumping. In deciding on bail Judge Dale English noted Schmitz bail jumping history and the fact that he was facing up to 29 years in prison. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Friday
