FDL Man Sentenced To Prison For Causing Serious Injury To A Child

The mother of a 4-year-boy told a Fond du Lac County judge Friday morning that doctors told her three years ago that because of a severe brain injury inflicted on her child by her boyfriend that the infant was going to die and if he survived would likely be in a vegetative state. But the boy survived although he is partially blind, can’t talk, subject to seizures, and is developmentally disabled.  Thirty-seven-year-old Jason Schifelbine apologized to the woman and her family before being sentenced, but maintained his story about the boy falling off a counter while he was putting the infants shoes on was true. Judge Gary Sharpe then sentenced Schifelbine to 15 years in prison and 10 years of extended supervision. Deputy District Attorney Dennis Krueger was pleased with the judge’s sentence. He says Schifelbine won’t be able to harm children for the next 15 years. Schifelbine was sentenced on a charge of Child Abuse-Intentionally Causing Great Bodily Harm. The boy’s mother called him “her little miracle,” but also told the judge the boy would need constant care throughout his life.  The incident happened in North Fond du Lac in August of 2014.
