FDL School District Working both Inside & Outside of School to Keep Students Safe

Officer-involved shooting incidents in Waukesha and Oshkosh last week and references to threats circulating on social media around the region have allowed officials with the Fond du Lac School District to pause and reflect on how much is being done locally to protect students from similar incidents happening here.

Superintendent Jim Sebert says that while a lot of money is being spent to enhance building security in the district, he credits teachers and staff for making students feel welcome and keeping them engaged. “Whether its athletics, or music or art – any club – you name it, kids, when the have that connection with that special adult in the school – at least one of them – the odds of this happening, you have to hope, lessen because kids have a purpose and they are there for a reason,” Sebert said.

Sebert tells us he is also thankful for the relationships the district has with the city Police and Fire Departments and Emergency Management, which he says are important when it comes to working through different situations facing students and staff.

The Fond du Lac School Board spent a portion of their meeting this week doing an annual review of the district’s Emergency Preparedness Manual and discussing evaluations of safety drills.
