Federal Funding For Hwy 23 Expansion Project Stopped

A decision by the U.S. Eastern
District Court has cut off federal funding for the Highway 23 expansion project
between Fond du Lac and Plymouth. District Judge Lynn Adelman issued the 26 page
decision upholding some of the claims filed in a lawsuit by 1000 Friends of
Wisconsin. His decision would cut off federal funding for the $146 million
19-mile project, but not state funding. In fact Governor Walker this past week
approved $10.4 million for grading work that was supposed to start Tuesday in
Sheboygan County. A status hearing in the federal case is scheduled for June
1st. According to Judge Adelman’s decision an environment impact statement
prepared by the DNR didn’t justify higher traffic volumes for an expanded 4-lane
highway.
