Fire Demonstration Makes Its Point

Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue put on a fire demonstration Friday morning showing how a home sprinkler system can save lives and homes. The demonstration was held behind Fire Station #1 on South Main Street and featured two rooms, one with a sprinkler system and one without. Division Chief of Fire Prevention Troy Haase says it only took a few seconds after a smoke alarm was activated by the smoke for the sprinkler system to kick in. He says the smoke detector went off 14 seconds after the fire was started and the sprinkler system kicked in at 25 seconds into the fire. It took about 2 ½ minutes for the room that wasn’t equipped with a sprinkler to become fully engulfed in the flames. At that point the air temperature in that room had reached 1200 degrees.
