Four Chaplains Memorial Service Scheduled In Waupun

The VFW Post in Waupun will hold a Four Chaplains Memorial Service at 11 a.m. February 2nd, at Central Wisconsin Christian School in Waupun. This is the 75th anniversary of the chaplains’ death, and is held in their honor. All four were first lieutenants in the Army and part of a U.S. troop transport on the USS Dorchester on February 3rd, 1943, when a torpedo struck the ship’s flank as it sailed through the icy seas of Greenland. Some 672 men were lost, but the chaplains who passed out life vests including their own helped save 230 lives. They were last seen on the slanting deck of the ship, with their arms linked in prayer. A lunch will be available following the service.
