FTC Settlement Scam

An administrator with the state’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says scammers are using the FTC’s settlement with Western Union to scam people out of personal information and money. Frank Frassetto says scammers are using emails in an effort to scam people who might benefit from the settlement. The email asks for the recipient’s bank account information so they can get money from the settlement. Frassetto says if you are benefitting from the actual settlement you would be getting a check in the mail. He says the FTC and other government agencies would not be asking for money, social security or any banking information over the phone so you can apply for a refund or receive cash back. He says if you get a call or an email, which says you will receive money in return for personal or banking information think about it first or you may become a victim of a scam.
