Gas Leak Discovered During Eviction At FDL Duplex

Fond du Lac Police are investigating a gas leak in a duplex that was discovered late Tuesday morning. Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says their crews responded to a call at 9 West 9th Street. He says a Sheriff’s deputy serving an eviction order was there with a maintenance man for the rental property when they noticed a strong natural gas odor. The maintenance man found a gas line in the basement that was turned on for no reason. He shut that off and the Sheriff’s deputy called dispatch to get the fire department there. O’Leary says they introduced fresh oxygen to the basement. After firefighters shut off the meters Alliant Energy crews locked down all the meters. The upper unit was already vacant and people in the lower unit had moved out. Backup sewage was also found in the basement.  Chief O’Leary says the Sheriff’s deputy did the right thing by having them called. He says fortunately nothing happened because it is a very populated area just off Main Street and 9th. The time of the call was about 10:45 a.m. (Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue photo).
