Get Licensed For Scooter Riding At MPTC

In addition to its standard motorcycle safety courses, Moraine Park Technical College now has a convenient way for scooter riders to get licensed as well.

“If you own a scooter that is bigger than 50cc and can go faster that 30 mph, it is considered a motorcycle and requires a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license to operate it. Moraine Park has new, fully automatic scooters and classes available to help you obtain that license the right way,” said Kim Rudat, Moraine Park motorcycle safety instructor.

Moraine Park added two scooters to its motorcycle fleet this spring. Rudat said they offer advantages for those who want to ride but are unsure about or uninterested in riding an actual motorcycle. Scooters are usually easier to learn and have automatic transmissions compared to needing to master a clutch and gear shift on motorcycles.

Moraine Park’s scooters will be integrated into the Motorcycle Safety courses on select dates. Those include the following options:

The College will offer scooter training the following weekends: July 22-24, July 29-31, Aug. 5-7, Aug. 19-21, Aug. 26-28 and Sept. 23-25. The weekend schedule includes class on Friday from 5 to 8:25 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Courses are designed for riders of all levels. Students get actual riding experience and learn basic skills, including straight-line riding, turning, shifting, braking and the mental skills needed for control.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued a waiver to take to the Department of Motor Vehicles. This waiver allows students to get a motorcycle license without taking a road test.

All courses are held at Moraine Park’s Fond du Lac campus. Motorcycles and scooters, along with helmets, are provided by Moraine Park.
