Head Of DPI Says Easing Of Teacher Licensing Requirements Wrong Headed

State Superintendent of Public Education Tony Evers has concerns about a proposal in the state budget that would ease teacher licensing requirements. He says anyone with a bachelor’s degree could teach English, Math, Social Studies or Science if they are determined to be proficient. He says you wouldn’t even need a bachelor’s degree to teach classes outside those core subjects. He feels the easing teaching requirements would decrease the quality of teaching in the state. He fears the proposal will pass as part of the state budget. He says it seems to be destined for signing by the Governor. Evers says he was at a graduation party over the weekend and the teachers who were there were angry about the licensing proposal.
