Highway 41 Standoff Ends With Two Dead

Two liquor store robbery suspects killed themselves during a standoff with police on Highway 41 near Oshkosh yesterday. Winnebago County Sheriff’s officials say they found a man and a woman dead in a car on Highway 41 after hearing two gunshots. Police did not fire any weapons. The two were suspects in a liquor store robbery that happened hours earlier. The car was pulled over on Highway 41 near Winnebago County Highway Y. Efforts by officers to contact the two inside the car were unsuccessful. The highway was shut down between Highways 45 and 76 as a precaution, because a handgun had been displayed during the robbery at Hank’s Payne’s Point Liquor Store in Vinland. The male suspect left the store with about $600 while the woman waited outside in the car. The standoff ended shortly before 6 p.m., but it was several hours before Highway 41 southbound was reopened near State Highway 76.
