Highway Heroes

Three Fond du Lac County highway workers are being recognized for saving a Merrill woman’s life when she was trapped in a burning car after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 45 last Friday afternoon. County Highway Commissioner Tom Janke says Jim Guell, Steve Reilly and Dan Hornburg were taking gravel to a construction project in New Fane when they stopped at the accident scene north of County Highway F. He says Guell stopped first blocking off other traffic with his truck and grabbed a fire extinguisher. Reilly and Hornburg followed suit when they arrived. Janke says the fire extinguishers are generally in all their trucks. He says they assisted with other Good Samaritans who had stopped to help. Janke says if the vehicle had continued to burn the outcome could have been tragic for the woman involved, Amber Wiedmeyer. The three will be recognized during a Highway Committee meeting Thursday morning.  (Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department photo).
