Hot Weather Keeping Algae Around

The hot weather is hanging around – and that means blue green algae is staying as well. Many residents around Lake Winnebago and other bodies of water says it’s the worst they have seen in a long time. The algae is caused by nutrient run-off – and usually goes away after Labor Day. But it’s staying a little longer this year. Health officials say it’s important to remember to avoid it, as some algae can produce toxins that cause stomach issues, rashes, and other problems. It’s unclear how much longer the algae will last – but cooler temperatures, wind, and rain will help knock it out.
