House Fire On East Bank Street

24-Jan-2014

(9:00 a.m.)-Fire destroyed a home in the 200 block of East Bank Street in Fond du Lac early this morning. Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O’Leary says the resident of the home had to jump out a window to escape the blaze. The man then went to a neighbor’s house and called 911. O’Leary says although the home is a complete loss it’s a successful firefighting effort because no one was hurt. Because of the bitter cold temperatures and all the water used to put out the fire what remains of the home will have to be boarded up and heated so they can investigate the cause of the fire. Chief O’Leary says after talking to the resident of the home they believe the fire started in the front living room. He says they learned the man was a smoker and had candles. The cause could have been due to a cigarette that wasn’t properly discarded. The man was sleeping in a room next to where the fire began.

Division Chief of Fire Prevention Troy Haase says no one was injured during the blaze. The man living in the home was awakened by a smoke detector going off. He says a few residents living in neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution, but have been allowed to return to their homes. Haase says they got help from eight other departments during the fire, some of them helping manning a fire station for other calls. The fire call came in just before 2 a.m. Portions of North Park and East Bank were closed to traffic during the fire.
