Ice Conditions Improved Over Last Week

A DNR Conservation Warden for the Fond du Lac area says the last week of cold weather really helped to solidify the ice on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes for the sturgeon spearing season. William Hankee says that doesn’t mean conditions on Lake Winnebago aren’t still unpredictable, but on average there will be some pretty solid ice. He says there is about 14 to 18 inches of ice, which is safe to drive on. He says you should still be careful around the landings, rock outcroppings and vegetation, and cracks although there should be bridges over some of them. The sturgeon spearing season begins today.
