Ice Conditions On Lake Winnebago Unpredictable

A Division Chief with Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue says it is best to take your time and get acquainted with ice conditions on Lake Winnebago. Troy Haase says a recent incident where a 24-year-old Fond du Lac man was thrown into open water after hitting an ice shove with his ATV illustrates how unpredictable ice conditions can be on the lake. He says fishing clubs plow roads on the ice and set up bridges for those that ice fish and soon sturgeon spearers. He says it might be best to check with them before taking a vehicle out on the lake. He says if you get in trouble on the ice it could be a long wait while rescuers get to you. Haase says no matter how cautious you are sometimes things can go wrong.
