Information Preserved For Lakeshore Drive Railroad Overpass Project

About a dozen people attended the North Fond du Lac Village Board meeting Monday night to hear about efforts to put an overpass on Lakeshore Drive over the Canadian National Railroad yard. Preliminary plans were prepared in 2013. But a snag was hit during the preliminary design phase when the railroad company refused to recognize the project without construction funding committed to it. Village Administrator Chuck Hornung says the purpose of the public involvement meeting was to let property owners know where it stood and preserve the work that has been done should funding for the project become available. He says, “If down the road anything would happen that that would rise up, the funding would be there we could continue on from this point. So this is more or less finalizing what has been done, putting it on a shelf and then waiting to see if it will ever be, ever be used.” He says property owners that would be impacted by an overpass still can do what they wish with their property. He says, “This in no way changes anything you may want to do with your property, if you want to sell it, if you want to build on it. If you do want to sell it the Village has an option.” The Village will use the preliminary design information to formally update their official map to preserve the right-of-way for the future needs of the project. The project construction cost is currently estimated at $12.3 million.
