Keeping Your Pets & Livestock Safe From The Cold

While it’s important to protect yourself from the extreme
cold this week, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade and
Consumer Protection are reminding people to think of their pets and other
outdoor animals as well. DATCP officials say owners
should make sure their pets and livestock have adequate food – making sure
outdoor animals get more food than usual and at good quality to produce body
heat – adequate shelter, such as a windbreak or three-sided shelter for larger animals
or an enclosed space for smaller ones – and access to fresh water daily. “Animals
can suffer from hypothermia, frostbite, and other cold weather injuries. Harsh
conditions can also weaken their immune systems leaving them vulnerable to
illness.”
