Keyes Honored As Hero

Joyce Keyes of the Fond du Lac County Red Cross chapter got a bit of a surprise when she showed up at the chapter’s office on North Main Street in Fond du Lac Thursday afternoon. Keyes may have thought she was there to have cake and help another valuable contributor to the Red Cross, Sherry Holmes, celebrate her retirement. The surprise came when Wisconsin First Lady Tonette Walker showed up with a plaque honoring Keyes with the Wisconsin Heroes Award for the month of April. Keyes was honored for her many contributions especially volunteering to help out at natural disaster sites across the nation including Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy. She says she feels honored, but it takes team work. But it wasn’t Keyes who teared up during the presentation, but Walker when she read the proclamation listing all of Keyes contributions. Keyes said she was quite surprised and will continue volunteering with the Red Cross for as long as she’s able.
