Determining Whether You Have Lead Pipes In Your Home

Fond du Lac Public Works Director Jordan Skiff says there are ways of telling whether you have lead pipes delivering water to your home. He says lead pipes were primarily used before 1950. He says if you are not sure look where the water pipe comes in from outside your home near the water meter, usually in the basement. When you locate the pipes there are a couple simple tests. Scratch the pipe to see if there is a dull gray appearance to the pipe. You can also try a magnet on it. If it sticks it is not lead. He says if you do have lead pipes you can use water filters or run the water for a brief period of time in the morning to reduce the accumulation of lead until the pipes are replaced. There is also more information available at the City’s website.
