Crosswalk Work Begins Monday In FDL

Fond du Lac’s Public Works Department will be working on the brick crosswalks at the intersections of Main St. and Second St. and Main St. and Sheboygan St. Work begins Monday at the intersection of Main St. and Second St. and the crosswalk on the east side of Main and Sheboygan St. will be closed completely. The bricks in the crosswalks will be removed, and new stamped and colored concrete will be placed in the crosswalk areas. The intersections will be reopened next Friday. There will be no detours for the work.

Welcome Back Food Drive A Success

The Third Annual Welcome Back Food Drive for the Fond du Lac School District resulted in a lot of non-perishable food donations to the Fondy Food Pantry. In fact when school staff attended the Welcome Back event at the High School Performing Arts Center on August 25th they filled 22 grey bins and 2 big blue bins with food. District Superintendent Jim Sebert says Parkside Elementary Teacher Melody Matty came up with the idea for the food drive three years ago and it is a nice way to help out people in need.

Ripon College Students Can Absentee Vote At The College Next Month

Ripon College students will have the opportunity to vote absentee in person at the college next month. The Ripon Common Council this week approved the additional location. City Administrator Lori Rich says they are hoping students at the college will take advantage of it. She says that should help relieve congestion on Election Day, but that voting district is the busiest with the longest lines. The absentee voting at the college will be held in the Mihaly (muh-HAY-lee) Room from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 12th and 13th. The in person absentee voting will also be available at the clerk’s office at the Ripon City Hall beginning September 26th.

MPTC Rededicates 9 11 Tribute Area

Moraine Park Technical College rededicated its 9-11 tribute site at its Fond du Lac campus last week. Steve Pepper is a student veteran specialist at Moraine Park. He says it was a way to kick off their year-long Year of the Student Veteran activities. He says they added some paver stones and put up three flag poles, one for the American Flag, one for the State Flag, and one for the college’s flag. Plaques were also added to the new tribute area acknowledging the service to the community of Fond du Lac  police and fire departments.

Eldorado Resident Crashin For The Cause

The Oshkosh Speedzone at the Winnebago County Fairgrounds will host the 13th Annual Crashin’ for the Cause charity demolition today. It will benefit the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance. Abby Kopf (CUFF) of Eldorado says her 13-year-old daughter Malayna has it and has battled with seizures off and on since she was 4-years-old. Brain surgery at a very young age helped. Start time for the event is 12 noon. There will also be food and beverages. Last year the event raised over $36,000. Donations can also be sent to the Eldorado Lions Club, TS Benefit, W9569 Rose Eld Road, Rosendale, WI 54974. 

Dodge County United Way Sets Campaign Goal

The Executive Director of the Dodge County United Way says they will hold their kick off event in Waupun next Saturday. Susan Jentz says they will be doing a food packaging event for area food pantries along with the Fond du Lac Area United Way. Jentz says the Dodge County United Way has set an ambitious fundraising goal for this fall. She says they hope to raise $260,000. That will help fund 18 agencies that provide over 30 programs in the community. Jentz says during the food packaging event they hope to package 50,000 meals. September is National Hunger Awareness Month.

Congressman Grothman Accepting Nominations For US Service Academies

Congressman Glenn Grothman’s Office is accepting applications for nominations to the U.S. Service Academies through October 12th. Once all applications have been submitted, a commission of distinguished Sixth District residents will select candidates for an interview. From there, the final nominees will be selected and announced in December.  Members of Congress are asked to nominate candidates to the service academies each year. To be considered, candidates must be: a U.S. citizen, single, have no dependents and not be pregnant, at least 17 (but no older than 23) as of the date classes begin and a resident of the Sixth District.
