Ewell Sentencing Today

The 36-year-old Fond du Lac woman who helped her sister hide a murder victim’s body will be sentenced today. In October a Fond du Lac County jury found Tina Ewell guilty of helping her sister Eve Nance hide the body of Nance’s husband Tim after Eve shot and killed him in their home in November of 2013. Eve Nance was sentenced in May to 25 years to life in prison. Judge Peter Grimm is presiding over Ewell’s sentencing.

Oshkosh Man Sought By Calumet County Officials Captured In Las Vegas

A 29-year-old Oshkosh man wanted for kidnapping and armed robbery has been captured in Las Vegas. The state’s Department of Justice says Edwin Hughes will be extradited back to Wisconsin. There are active warrants on Hughes in Calumet, Outagamie and Dane Counties. Those are for kidnapping, armed robbery, battery and other crimes. DOJ officials say Hughes was considered “dangerous.”  Hughes was released from prison in July of last year. He was living in Oshkosh, but last contacted his parole officer in August.

Oakfield Man Escapes Serious Injury In Rollover Accident

A 19-year-old Oakfield man suffered only minor injures after being thrown from a vehicle in a rollover accident on Fond du Lac County Highway F. Sheriff’s Captain Ryan Waldschmidt says Andrew Feavel told deputies he fell asleep at the wheel Wednesday morning while he was heading east on County Highway F. His vehicle went over the center line, off the road and struck a driveway culvert. It became airborne and rolled over throwing him from it. Feavel was taken to St. Agnes Hospital with minor injuries. The accident happened just east of Hickory Road.

FDL Vendor May Work With State On Placement Of Dodge County Sex Offenders

Unable to find placement for two violent sex offenders in Dodge County, the state’s Department of Health Services could work with a housing vendor from Fond du Lac willing to work with the department. That came up this week during a Dodge County Court hearing about Robert Larson’s placement. The DHS has been trying to find housing for Larson and Jonathan Miller, but efforts to do that in Brownsville, Lomira and Reeseville have failed. The Fond du Lac vendor has never worked in Dodge County so no deal is expected for at least a few weeks. Both men are staying at Sandridge Secure Detention Facility in Mauston.

Smoke In FDL Home

Fond du Lac firefighters Tuesday afternoon responded to 439 Grove Street for a report of smoke in a basement. Fire Captain Jim Knowles say the problem was with a fuel oil boiler. There were traces of carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide in the basement. Firefighters ventilated the room. The home did not need to be evacuated. Knowles says furnaces and fuel oil boilers should be inspected annually. He says carbon monoxide detectors are also helpful. He says if you need help installing one or to find out how to get one give the fire department a call at 322-3800.

Recount Not Necessary

It is the opinion of Congressman Glenn Grothman that a recount of the Presidential vote in Wisconsin or elsewhere in the nation was not necessary. He says Green Party candidate Jill Stein certainly wasn’t going to win the presidency through a recount. He feels it was an effort to discredit Donald Trump’s victory in the election. He says on the other hand it did keep Hillary Clinton’s name out there in case she makes another run in 2020. He says there were a lot of divisive people fighting Donald Trump and they will continue to be divisive.

Remembering Pearl Harbor

Congressman Glenn Grothman says the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor presents a good opportunity to learn more about the sacrifices that were made to keep us safe and free. He says that generation went through a lot that subsequent generations did not have to. Grothman says each generation seems linked to certain dates when traumatic tragedies happened that had an international impact. He says December 7th is a date his parent’s generation won’t forget, September 11th for a younger generation or November 22nd the JFK assassination for his generation.

Save A Smile

The oral health coordinator for the Fond du Lac County Health Department says their Save a Smile dental health program for children has been going strong for nine years. Samantha Twohig says people are aware of their program for children on medical assistance, but they also have a program for adults who have urgent needs who are on medical assistance or are income eligible. She says they have a number of local dentists who give their time for the program.  She says about 40 dentists participate in it. She says poor dental health can have an impact on your daily life. She says it can compromise your ability to go to work or school. Twohig says there are no dentists in the community accepting patients on medical assistance so the Save a Smile program is the only local resource for those people. She says you can call them at 929-3090 with any questions.
