Neighborhood Canvassed Following FDL House Fire

Fond du Lac firefighters canvassed a neighborhood Monday where fire damaged a two-story home. Fire Captain Jim Knowles says crews hung door hangars and knocked on doors to make sure residents had working smoke detectors. A Christmas morning fire damaged the basement of a two-story home at 473 Park Avenue. A 9-year-old boy awoke to smoke on the first floor and alerted his parents. They escaped safely. There were no working smoke detectors in either the basement or first floor of the home.

Water Tower Loan Being Refinanced

The Village of North Fond du Lac will be taking a debt off its books that helped in the financing of a water tower for the Town of Fond du Lac. Village Administrator Chuck Hornung says they helped the town in 2009 by taking out the loan for the town. He says the town paid for the engineering and cost of building the water tower itself. He says the town now has an opportunity to refinance the loan and take on the debt themselves. He says the town made the payments on the loan and refinancing the loan will save the town several hundred thousands of dollars over the remaining life of the loan. He says the village benefits from being able to walk away from the loan. He says the town had hoped to do the refinancing by the end of this year.

Decisions On NFDL Referendum Question Weeks Away

In a few short weeks the North Fond du Lac School Board will consider the wording for an April Referendum. District Superintendent Aaron Sadoff says in a survey they sent out this fall 60 percent of respondents said they would support a referendum if the district can manage to keep their taxes in line. Sadoff says they do have some facilities needs. He says they want to do a significant addition and remodeling at the Friendship Learning Center, putting all of their early childhood through fifth graders under one roof. He says there are some thing at Bessie Allen Middle School and Horace Mann High School they also have to address. The school board will meet the fourth Monday of January and finalize the question or questions for the referendum. He says they are looking at a referendum that will commit to $25 to $30 million in facilities improvements. Sadoff says they will make sure plenty of information is released about what they are asking for from voters so they can make an informed decision.
