Large Manure Spill In Pipe Creek

Fond du Lac County officials are trying to determine how to handle a large manure spill into Pipe Creek. County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says it’s estimated that 50,000 gallons of manure spilled into the creek from a local dairy, Lake Breeze Dairy in Malone. She says fortunately they recently took samples in the creek so they have a base to test more recent samples against. The creek is a tributary to Lake Winnebago. There’s been a large fish kill the result of the spill, which made its way into a storm water ditch and eventually the creek. Clean up efforts are being made. A hose being used to spread manure at the farm was the source of the leak. Mueller says the County has had manure spills before, but not this large. Lake Breeze Dairy has about 3,000 animals and has more than 30 full-time employees.

There need to be contingency plans in place when manure is being spread close to the lake and it's tributaries in case there are large spills. The East side of the lake is largely agricultural and the land slopes toward the lake. During the spring and times of heavy rain all of the runoff flows directly into the lake. There needs to be better processes in place to minimize this runoff and contamination.
