Local Crews Gathering Donations for Hurricane Florence Victims
Residents in North Carolina and neighboring states are working to recover from the heavy impact of Hurricane Florence earlier this month. That’s why the local Sons of the American Legion and Patriot Emergency Response Team are gathering donations to ship out to the east coast.
Brian Stenz tells us “a lot of the things that we’re collecting are personal hygiene, basic necessities, hand tools – just a lot of miscellaneous items that can be used in everyday use. One of the biggest needs right now with the flooding is that every person who has a house is going to have to basically gut the house out, clean it out, and start over. So they’re basically needing those items to live on while they do that.”
Stenz adds that “right now the biggest thing is that we could use some manpower. We’ve
got two groups of people working together quite well, but of course – obviously
people have jobs, people work. A lot of us that are out there on a regular
basis are either on disability or don’t work full time jobs so we’re able to be
there a lot more than others. But feel free to stop by at any time, we’re
always needing the help.”
And if you’re considering donating food, Stenz reminds people to only bring in non-perishable food because “it might sit for up to one or two months. The last time we sent a truck
to
sent 29,000 pounds. We were informed that after a period of two months, the
only thing left was bottled water. But they had received two additional trucks
of water on top of ours.”
Items will be accepted at the American Legion Post along Fond du Lac Avenue from noon until 6:00pm today – and then from 9:00am-6:00pm every day through October 8th.
