Local News Briefs For Tuesday 9/16/14

Waupun Police had to talk a very drunken man out of his bathroom after he locked himself in it Sunday. Police got a call to the 600 block of Morse Street about a man who was screaming. When officers arrived they found out someone had been trying to calm him down, but he had locked himself in a bathroom and may have a gun. They managed to talk him out of the home. He left the unloaded gun on a bed. The man’s girlfriend had been arrested for drunken driving after getting into a traffic accident. Disorderly conduct charges are pending against him.

Grafton Man Hurt In Sheboygan County Drunken Driving Accident

(WHBL-Sheboygan)-A 36-year-old Grafton man was hospitalized over the weekend after crashing his car in Sheboygan County’s Town of Scott.  Sheriff’s officials say James Arrowood was driving on Cranberry Road on Saturday afternoon when he went through a T-intersection and his car went airborne, clipped a post, and slammed into a grove of trees.  He was taken to the hospital in Grafton with non-life-threatening injuries.  Arrowood was cited for drunk driving.

Forest Avenue Bridge In Fondy Closed Starting Today

Fond du Lac’s Public Works Department informs us that the Forest Avenue Bridge will be closed between Military Road and Macy Street.  The closure started this morning at 7:00 a.m. and it will remain closed approximately one week. The bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic while maintenance is being completed on the bridge approach.   There will be no marked detour.

Looking For The Edge In Economic Development

The president of the Fond du Lac County Economic Development Corporation says every community wants an edge when it comes to attracting new business. Steve Jenkins says it’s true Fond du Lac is centrally located and has a great workforce, but it’s not enough these days. He says the Emergent Technology Center will be a way to develop entrepreneurial ideas and is something unique the community will be able to offer. The first class is later this month. He says they are still narrowing down the location for the center, but it will be ready to go for that first class.

Monitoring Younger Teens Social Networking For Signs Of Emotional Help Problems

A counselor for the Fond du Lac County Y Screen program says parents should be monitoring their children’s social networking. Y Screen offers 9th graders a free and confidential emotional health screen. Sharon Stoffel says 1 in 5 teens struggle with emotional health concerns. She says obviously the older the teen the more equipped they are with handling their problem. She says they aren’t always going to tell their parents they are having problem. Stoffel talked last week during National Suicide Prevention Week about a survey that showed 14 percent of Wisconsin teens who were surveyed had considered suicide and 16 percent of teens at the Fond du Lac High School who were surveyed had said they had thought about it. She says one of the ways to prevent it is to ask the right questions.

Veterans Dinner Scheduled For November 13^th

Salute the Troops this November will be holding a special banquet in Fond du Lac to honor veterans. Salute the Troops Executive Director Alex Louis says it will be held on November 13th. Salute the Troops Board of Directors Vice President Richard Feustel says it’s the first of what they hope will be an annual event to paid tribute to our veterans. Feustel was in the military for 23 years, which included being stationed on a submarine. Louis says they are looking for sponsors or even those who would simply like to attend. Louis says more information about the event will be released as they get closer to it. The Master of Ceremonies for the dinner will be Fond du Lac City Manager Joe Moore who was a colonel in the Army.

Service Academy Day In Oshkosh Saturday

Congressman Tom Petri, both of Wisconsin’s U.S. Senators and several other members of the Wisconsin congressional delegation will sponsor the annual Academy Day in Oshkosh this Saturday. Young men and women, teachers and parents are invited to attend and learn more about opportunities available in the nation’s distinguished service academies. Representatives from four of the nation’s service academies will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Experimental Aircraft Association Education Center in Oshkosh. The academies include the Air Force Academy, the Merchant Marine Academy, the Military Academy and Naval Academy. Representatives from the Coast Guard Academy will also attend. Advanced Registration is not required.

YPF Casino Night This Friday

The Young Professionals of Fond du Lac will hold their Casino Night Fundraiser this Friday night at the South Hills Golf & Country Club in Fond du Lac.  All proceeds raised from the event will go directly to the Fondy Food Pantry. “By partnering with the Fondy Food Pantry YPF hopes to not only raise funds but to also raise awareness,” explained Jenny Knuth, 2014 YPF President.  South Hills will be transformed into a Las Vegas style casino; attendees will be playing for many wonderful grand prizes donated by area businesses.   Cost to attend the event is $35.00 for YPF members and $35.00 for their guest, $45.00 for non-YPF members.  Cost includes an all you can eat buffet, free beer and “fun” money to play the games.  To register for this event, or for more information, contact Katie Leist at the Association of Commerce, (920) 921-9500 or visit www.fdlac.com.
