Tobacco Free Living Coordinator Comments On CVS Decision

The coordinator for the 5 Counties for Tobacco Free Living says a decision by CVS Pharmacy to pull cigarettes and tobacco products from its more than 7,600 U.S. locations is a victory for public health. Sandy Bernier who works for the Fond du Lac County Health Department says it sets a good example for others. She says those products are visual triggers for youth and those trying to quit and removing them from store shelves will have an impact. She says the move by CVS Pharmacy will definitely save lives and reduce health care costs. CVS will be pulling those products from its shelves beginning October 1st. The nearest CVS Pharmacy location to Fond du Lac is in Oshkosh.

Sturgeon Spearing

Winnebago Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs says favorable ice and water clarity conditions could make for a better sturgeon spearing season when it begins Saturday. He says license sales topped 10,000 for the first time in 2010 and were at about 12,000 for this season, but declined slightly over the last two years because of poor conditions. He says there’s definitely an appeal to the sport with a chance of spearing a fish over 100 pounds, but the sport has camaraderie and its own culture too. The record fish taken on Lake Winnebago was a 212 pound sturgeon, but Koenigs says they tagged an even bigger fish during spawning season a couple springs ago. This season also has new daily hours, which run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
