STAAND Presents To FDL City Council

The Fond du Lac chapter of Students Taking Action Against Negative Decisions or STAAND presented their findings on a recent environmental study to the City Council this week. STAAND students and members of the high school’s current events class assessed the amount of alcohol advertising youth are exposed to in Fond du Lac. Baeley Bovee Hanson of STAAND says according to one study a kid’s first taste of alcohol comes shortly before their 13th birthday or 12.9 years old. Places that sell alcohol in Fond du Lac are not supposed to use more than 25 percent of their window space to advertise alcohol. Hanson says two-thirds of businesses complied with that, a 10 percent increase over the last environmental assessment in 2011. And there was a decrease in advertising on the exterior of those establishments. That was done by 15 percent. City Council President Lee Ann Lorrigan thanked the students for their presentation.

NFDL Puts In Bid On Tax Delinquent Property

North Fond du Lac is putting in a bid for a property the County took over because of tax delinquency. It’s located at 425 Illinois Avenue. Village Administrator Chuck Hornung says the village board this week decided to place a bid on it. He says when the village puts in a bid on such a property it does so with the hope of making it marketable and getting it back on the tax roll. He says sometimes they get it at a fair price. He says they could donate it to Habitat for Humanity or look at having a builder put up an improvement on it so there’s tax base on it. Hornung says another property they got through such means will be built on this fall. He says a builder will be working with the schools building trades program to put up a house on that property.
