Local News Briefs Friday 4/3/15

Charges have been brought against a 56-year-old Kiel man who tried to disrupt the burial service for State Trooper Trevor Casper in a Kiel cemetery Monday. Michael Mangan had a bail bond hearing in Manitowoc County Court Thursday. He is charged with resisting an officer by causing a soft tissue injury, obstructing an officer, and two disorderly conduct charges. He was released on a signature bond and will make his initial court appearance next Monday. According to the criminal complaint he was seen carrying a brown paper bag in the cemetery with a black object protruding from the top. Police believed it might be a long barrel weapon. Authorities had reason to believe there was a threat from a radical group that Steven Snyder was affiliated with. Snyder was the bank robber the Trooper exchanged fatal gunfire with in Fond du Lac last week. Mangan resisted officers’ efforts to escort him from the cemetery. One of the officers suffered neck and back injuries.  It’s believed Mangan suffers from mental health issues.

Congress Grothman Says Reid Wore Out His Welcome

At least one Wisconsin Congressman will be glad to see U.S. Senator Harry Reid go. Congressman Glenn Grothman says he’s not surprised that Reid has decided he won’t seek reelection next year. He says when longtime Congressman Dave Obey stepped down his polling data was horrible. He says Reid probably wore out his welcome in Nevada and may not have been able to muster enough support to win another election. The federal lawmaker from Campbellsport says Reid quitting is good news for the GOP. He says the Senate hasn’t done much over the last 4 to 6 years while Reid was the majority leader and he says a lot of that can be laid at Reid’s doorstep.

Public Health Officer Comments On County Health Rankings

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says the County finished in the middle of the pack in the recent County health rankings. The County finished 34th out of 72 counties in the health outcomes category in the rankings released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She says that means there’s room for improvement. The County finished somewhat better in the health factors category finishing 20th. She says that measures the length of life and the quality of life. She says the study measures a lot of health behaviors including smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, teen birth, excessive drinking and more than can be changed. Fond du Lac ranks in the top quarter of Wisconsin counties for clinical care (17), and in the top half for health behaviors (25) and social and economic factors (26). Fond du Lac County ranks near the middle for physical environment (40). The Rankings are available at www.countyhealthrankings.org.

ACT Testing At FDL High School Goes Well

The Fond du Lac High School principal says first-time ACT testing of all juniors at the high school last month went pretty smoothly. Michelle Hagen says staff did a good job in organizing the two days of testing. She says not every high school junior was there for testing, but the majority of the over 500 juniors were. She says only about 16 weren’t able to be there and the students who took the testing put forth a great effort. She says this month high school freshman and sophomores will be taking their own version of ACT testing Aspire. She says it measures student progression and growth. That testing will be conducted on April 28th and 29th.
