Local News Briefs Friday 7/11/14

Fond du Lac City Councilman Gary Miller says he’s glad the City will be having a discussion about the use of Lakeside Park. Miller amended a resolution the Council passed Wednesday night creating a Lakeside Park Exploratory Committee using the word utilization in place of development because he believes the committee should look at whether the park is being under utilized a term Councilwoman Lee Ann Lorrigan first used in discussions about forming a committee. He says if not for the foresight of previous City leaders there wouldn’t be such a large and beautiful park. A speaker at this week’s Council meeting said the City was hitting a slippery slope by even having discussions that includes talking about possible commercial development. Miller says in the long run discussing the future of the park is a good thing.

Prairie Trail will also be moved to go under the overpass structure with a connection to County T. The project is scheduled for construction in 2015 and completed in 2016.

Program Helps Those Facing Eviction And Utility Disconnection

Area churches are a silent partner to a program the Solutions Center uses to help residents behind on rent and utilities. Solutions Center Interim Executive Director Maggie McCullough says through the program people can get help when they bring in an eviction notice or disconnect notice. She says the Solutions Center and the Salvation Army will each pay $75 towards the bills, but that person has to come up with the rest of it. McCullough says they wouldn’t be able to provide the program without the help of local churches. She says it amounts to about $25,000 a year alone for the assistance program the Solutions Center does. She says this year they saw quite a few apply for the program after the winter moratorium on utility cutoffs ended.

Ripon Common Council Considers Move To Amend Request

Ripon’s Common Council this week met with officials from a local Move to Amend effort. The effort is trying to reverse a recent Supreme Court decision to restore campaign contribution limits. Enough signatures were gathered on petitions to get the Council to consider a resolution or placing a referendum on the November 4th ballot. City Administrator Lori Rich says if the Council decides at their July 28th meeting to place the Move to Amend questions on the ballot it will cost the City $1,500 to $2,000. The Council could decide to support the issue through a resolution.
