Local News Briefs Monday 2/17/14

Fond du Lac Public Works Director Jordan Skiff says the winter has been tough on the city’s streets. Skiff says they’ve seen ore dips and heaves due to the frost including a section on Fond du Lac Avenue he noticed recently that required public works crews to grind it down to level it out. He says he lives in the area so he has to drive that road every day. He says they’ve fixed the problems where they could. Skiff says drivers can expect the usual problems with potholes appearing as the ground thaws and temperatures begin to rise this spring.

Three-County Boat Launch Fee Approved By FDL County Board

The Fond du Lac County Board recently approved a three-county boat landing parking permit that could be used at county-owned boat launches on Lake Winnebago. Fond du Lac County Executive Al Buechel says it’s an option for boat owners. He says Fond du Lac, Calumet and Winnebago Counties are participating in testing the fee this spring. He says if you just want to get a permit for one county it will be $25. But for $50 you can get a permit that would allow you to launch your boat and county-owned launches around the lake. He says if the program works out they will look at expanding the fee to see if it could include village and city-owned launches.

Demolition Of Wells Building Going Slow

Demolition of a portion of the former Wells Manufacturing facility on South Brooke Street in Fond du Lac is a bit behind schedule. Community Development Director Wayne Rollin says the unusual winter has come into play. Asbestos has already been removed and some interior demolition done, but outside demolition hinges on the weather. Commonwealth Development is investing $1.8 million in the project that will allow them to convert the site into their headquarters, landscaping business, and possible restaurant and café.
