Local News Briefs Monday 3/24/14

Former Fond du Lac City Councilman Mick Burroughs is seeking a second term on the Council. Burroughs left the Council in April of last year when his first term expired. At the time the job he held with the state Corrections Department interfered with his availability for meetings, but he’s no longer with the department. He says there are a lot of good things going on in the City and he’d like to have a role in them.  Burroughs worked for the Fond du Lac Police Department for 25 years retiring as a lieutenant in 2007. He says he saw a lot of good changes in that time. Burroughs points to his experience on Council as one reason he should be elected noting his two years on Council is more than half of the current Council members have served on the Council. There are five candidates running for four seats on the Council April 1st.

EAA Reached Agreements With FAA For Air Traffic Control Services

Congressman Tom Petri and U.S. Senator Ron Johnson are commenting on agreements the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Federal Aviation Administration reached on the providing of air traffic controllers for the annual AirVenture. Petri says, “At the end of the day, the EAA felt this was the best course of action.” He said it was certainly not the best outcome possible, but it does give the organization and the general aviation community certainty that AirVenture will continue. He still questions the FAA’s authority to charge EAA for the costs.  Senator Johnson also said he understands why EAA leadership felt they needed a conclusion in the matter. The EAA and FAA signed two agreements a settlement agreement and a 9-year agreement in which the FAA will continue to provide air traffic control services for the event in Oshkosh through 2022. Last year the EAA had to pay the FAA almost $448,000 for those services.

He says they really should be grateful to the firefighters.

State Senate Awaits Outcome Of Voter ID Challenge

State Senator Rick Gudex says the State Senate is waiting for the State Supreme Court’s decision on Voter ID before it takes up any new legislation concerning the use of Voter ID. The state lawmaker from Fond du Lac says the Assembly passed another weaker version of Voter ID. He says that version wouldn’t do much to enhance what the state has now. He says the Governor is also waiting on the state high court’s decision before he decides whether to call a special session on Voter ID. He says the bill passed by the Assembly was authored by State Representative Michael Schraa and was loosely based on an Indiana law. He says that law was upheld by federal court.
